Brian Kiley talks about the new Conan

Brian Kiley's new album,
Self Portrait
Boston comedian Brian Kiley has been with Conan O'Brien through a lot of changes, from Late Night to The Tonight Show and now, to Conan, which premieres tonight on TBS. I spoke with him about the new show for TVSquad.com. You can read the piece here.

Kiley writes jokes for Conan's monologues, and somehow manages to write enough brilliant jokes for himself to fill a full headlining set. That's what you get on Kiley's new album, Self-Portrait. Barry Crimmins gives it 38 stars. Which, I am told, is a very excellent rating. A sample -- ""My dad fought in World War Two. And he never talks about it, of course. He's Japanese. He's a sore loser, my dad."

Kiley has been based on the west coast since The Tonight Show staff relocated from New York, so he doesn't make it back out to Boston too often. But when he does, I will certainly alert you here.

You can find Self-Portrait on iTunes here.

Leno Replacement Suggestions

I shot this video last week (originally intended fro another site) before the news became official that Andover native Jay Leno would be moving to the 11:35 time slot, bumping Brookline native Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show back by a half an hour. Since NBC will now have five hours of airtime to fill, I thought I'd give them my suggestions. The video is on my new YouTube channel, FromTheCrawlspace, which will feature odds and ends from my own music and comedy. I'll post something here every so often.

Bill Burr on The Tonight Show -- first stand-up performance of the Conan Era

Just posted a bit over at AOL's TVSquad blog about Canton native Bill Burr on The Tonight Show this evening. He'll be the first sand-up comic to do a performance spot on Conan O'Brien's watch as host.

Mike Birbiglia on Conan, The View

Comedians with Boston roots some together tonight when Shrewsbury native Mike Birbiglia appears on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. O'Brien, a Newton native, will leave Late Night on February 20 to take over hosting the Tonight Show from Jay Leno (coincidentally, an Andover native).

Birbiglia's off-Broadway show, Sleepwalk With Me, has been held over until March 22 -- no mean feat in a climate where the big name, big ticket shows are closing.

Birbiglia was on The View last week with Nathan Lane, who "presents" the show. The interview included a primer on how to pronounce "Birbiglia" (Joy Behar pronounced it "Bare-bee-lee-ah" instead of with the hard "g") and the difference between producing and presenting (apparently when you "present," you don't have to put up any money).
